Dieting Can Be Dangerous!??

For some, to lose weight, the worst thing they can do is to diet. For many the diet cycle is:

1. Deprivation

2. Weigh Loss

3. Eating again

4. Weight Gain.

I know that cycle well. Some call this, "Yo-Yo Dieting." Sling! Sling!
Some such dieting can lead to sleep disorders, eating disorders, emotional problems and physical disorders.
Restriction of certain types of foods can make you very hungry for those exact foods. Let's take chocolate for instance. No, we better not. But chocolate is very good for the heart. NO CHOCOLATE! When we get off the diet, we say, "Now for some chocolate. Yum!"
Sweets are often a restriction of diets. But let's not exaggerate that fact. We all need a small amount of sweet things to eat. My wife avoids candy.
Maybe your diet says, "No Bread! No Potatoes! No Starch! No Meat!"
Well, what does that leave to eat? Where is that chocolate?
My wife has been dieting for years because she must. Her diet says, "No Food!" But with me around the house these days, I make sure she gets one good meal at least a few times a week and I buy her chocolate milk because she will not drink the white stuff.
My readers know that I suggest putting a small notebook in your pocket and simply write down each item you eat, one item to a line. Dinner is not a single item. You should write, Pork Chop, Pork Chop, Potato, Salad, Jello®, Cake-one item on each line. When the little page is full, you stop eating for that day because there is no room left to add, Chocolate Bar, Ice Cream Cone and Fruit Punch. Writing down what you eat will make you more conscious of what you eat. That is good.
One suggestion is to turn off the television, sit at the table, eat slowly and drink water rather than too much juice or sugar-containing drinks. (Did you enter the carrots in your little notebook?) That is good advice. You will lose weight and you won't be on a diet. You will have changed your life style. You are not a couch potato dipping great handfuls of potato chips into your favorite bean dip while watching, The Stomach Turns.
Small things can bring a huge difference. My wife once had a diet where on one day she could have only vegetables, one day you could have only fruit, one day you could have only cereal and she could add meat once a week (preferable to the vegetables rather than the cereal). She had a vegetable soup she could eat everyday but she could not eat candy but sweets where not completely banned. It was very effective because she was on that diet for years. She had been a Weight Watchers® instructor and knew what she was talking about. On our twentieth wedding anniversary, she climbed back into her wedding dress without alterations of any kind. Yes, she was jogging too.
Keep your food diary will help you naturally gravitate toward better foods.
When you want to lose weight, don't go on a crash diet. Consider losing weight under the supervision of a doctor. When you report that you have lost some weight, you will probably get a professional complement. That fact alone can keep you on your diet.
You will want to exercise three times a week for one hour-or less if it is too difficult. You can eat more when you burn more calories.
Changing how and what you eat will be a lifetime commitment to better health. Dieting can be dangerous but changing your eating habits can be a life-long blessing.
